Inter Milan missed a chance to stretch their lead at the top of Serie A as two goals from Antonio Candreva ended a seven-game winless run for Lazio.

Candreva struck from the rebound when his 87th-minute penalty was saved by Samir Handanovic after Felipe Melo's foul on Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Both teams finished with 10 men as Melo and Milinkovic-Savic were then sent off in separate late incidents.

Mauro Icardi had earlier cancelled out Candreva's impressive strike.

The Italy midfielder's low shot from 18 yards, following a well-worked corner, put Lazio ahead in the fifth minute.

But Icardi sprinted though to find the bottom corner in the second half.

Melo climbed all over Milinkovic-Savic for a clear-cut penalty, which Candreva fired home at the second attempt for his fifth goal of the season.

Brazilian Melo earned a straight red for a wild challenge on Lucas Biglia, shortly before Milinkovic-Savic was given a second yellow card for time-wasting.

Inter go into the winter break with a one-point advantage over Fiorentina and Napoli as they search for their first title since 2010.
