Diego Costa: Chelsea striker will see out deal, says Jose Mourinho

Diego Costa will stay at Chelsea for the remaining three years of his contract, says manager Jose Mourinho.

The Spain striker, 27, has failed to recapture the form of his 20-goal debut season this campaign, scoring only four times as the champions have struggled.

He recently threw a training bib in the direction of Mourinho after being left as an unused substitute at Tottenham - for which he has since apologised.

"He is happy here," said Mourinho, before Monday's visit to Leicester.

"He's another one who has, I think, three more years [on his] contract. I see him staying at Chelsea for three more years, no problem. I see that."

Leicester have lost just one of 19 league games since their 3-1 defeat by Chelsea on 29 April

No Atletico return for Costa

Brazil-born Costa, who started the 2-0 win over Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday, joined Chelsea in the summer of 2014 for £32m from Atletico Madrid.

He has hinted at a possible return to the Vicente Calderon Stadium  but Mourinho said: "He didn't say that. He said in football you never know.

"Atletico is a great club. Madrid is a great city. La Liga is a great league.

"So why can't a player at 27 years old think that in football it's possible to be back? I don't see that as a problem."

With only four wins from 15 matches this season, Mourinho's defending champions find themselves 16th in the Premier League, one point above the bottom three.

On Monday, they face second-placed Leicester, who have surprised many by challenging at the top end of the table.

Ranieri knew Abramovich would sack him

City are managed by Claudio Ranieri, who will be facing Chelsea for the first time since being sacked by the club in 2004 and replaced by Mourinho as the Portuguese began his first stint as Blues boss.

The Italian has said he knew he would be fired by Chelsea as soon as Russian Roman Abramovich bought the club in July 2003.

Ranieri revealed: "The chief executive [then Trevor Birch] told me there is a new owner and I said 'me and you are the first who go home'. You imagine, the new owner arrives and he wants to put in his own men. It is normal.

"If the new owner wants to change something, it is normal. I wanted to show our best and we bought some good players. I wanted to win something.

"In July, Abramovich wanted to bring Sven Goran Eriksson, who was the manager of the England team. It wasn't possible for him and he said 'OK start and we'll see what we can buy'."
