Wales are set to face a hugely weakened Denmark side in their Nations League game on 9 September, as a result of an ongoing row between players and the Danish Football Association (DBU).
Senior Danish players have refused to sign a new national team agreement in a dispute over commercial rights.
The DBU now seems set to select Danish lower league players for a friendly with Slovakia and against Wales.
Manager Age Hareide and assistant Jon Dahl Tomasson will not be in charge.
The DBU has decided that Hareide should not be involved in the two games, as the Denmark team will consist of players he has not selected.
That would see Wales face a Denmark side without any of the players who reached the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, including Premier League stars such as Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen and Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen.
On Sunday, the DBU rejected an offer by the Danish Football Players' Association (Spillerforeningen) to play the two fixtures under the terms of their previous deal.
Instead the governing body has written to its domestic clubs in an attempt to compile a squad of new players who have not previously been involved with the national side.
"I hope as many as possible wish to support the Danish national team, as it is vital in any possible sanction at Uefa that we can explain that the DBU and Danish football have done what was in our power to make the most of the problems," the DBU elite director, Kim Hallberg, wrote in the letter.
Denmark risk being barred by Uefa if they fail to fulfil either of the fixtures.
The Denmark women's team boycotted a World Cup qualifier against Sweden in October 2017 in a dispute over employment conditions.
Uefa ruled out ejecting the team from qualification, instead awarding Sweden a 3-0 win and fining the DBU £18,000.
But the DBU was warned that Denmark would be ruled out of any Uefa tournament if it cancelled another match in the next four years.
The DBU therefore has no choice but to select a side drawn from the Danish Superliga and First Division, for the friendly against Slovakia on 5 September and then the Nations League game four days later against Wales in Aarhus.
Before the Denmark game, Wales begin their Nations League campaign on 6 September against the Republic of Ireland at Cardiff City Stadium.
