Joe Gomez will replace John Stones in the England team for Monday's Nations League tie against Spain in Seville.

Liverpool defender Gomez will win his fifth international cap as Manchester City's Stones is suspended after being booked twice in the competition.

But England manager Gareth Southgate refused to say who would replace Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson, who is also suspended.

"It's probably pretty clear Joe Gomez will be coming in," said Southgate.

"He's in really good form for his club and his matches for us against Spain and Brazil have been really polished.

"He's a young defender but he is a very good defender, good athleticism, uses the ball well. I'm looking forward to seeing him in this game.

"It's another opportunity for us to look at younger players. We're slowly building a squad of players who are comfortable playing at the highest level."

Southgate gave both Stones and Henderson the option of returning to their clubs. Stones did so, but Henderson stayed with the squad and was involved in a leadership meeting on Sunday but did not train.

Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, 18, could feature again after coming off the bench for his debut in the 0-0 draw against Croatia on Friday.

Spain top Group A4 in the inaugural Nations League having won their first two games, beating England 2-1 at Wembley in September.

Victory in Seville will be enough to see them win the group and book a place in the Nations League finals next June.

'We know they're a strong team'

Spain defender Cesar Azpilicueta says his side "know what to expect" when they play England.

"We know England are a very strong team," said the Chelsea player.

"They reached the semi-finals of the World Cup. They have been working a few years together and play in a very good way. We know what to expect and England have to win if they want to qualify for the final four in June."

After exiting the World Cup in the last 16 against Russia, Luis Enrique's side has scored 12 goals in three games.

They thrashed Wales 4-1 in Cardiff on Thursday, with Paco Alcacer scoring twice and further goals from Sergio Ramos and Marc Bartra.

England captain Harry Kane says his side are "not quite there" in terms of keeping possession in the same way Spain do.

"We've got different qualities," said Kane. "We've got great pace in the team, great one-against-one ability, and that's what we've got to try to exploit when we play them.

"It will be a tough game, but these are the experiences you want to be in."

What the managers say

Spain boss Luis Enrique: "I like Southgate as a coach. England always try to play the ball. He's adapted to his players, something we all have to do. I followed him and I like the way he plays football.

"He has just renewed [his contract, until 2022] and that means they trust him - and he has helped me learn English with his press conferences."

On England's set-piece threat, he added: "It's one of their virtues. They made the most of it during the World Cup and we'll have to be ready for it.

"We have to try to ensure they win the fewest amount of free-kicks and corners against us, and we will also have to watch out for their counter-attacks, which is another of their virtues. "It's one of England's virtues, they made the most of it during the World Cup and we'll have to be ready for it."

England manager Gareth Southgate: "We know their technical ability but we've also got to cause them problems with the ball. We can't come here and just defend for 90 minutes.

"It's as difficult a test as you can have in European football at the moment - if not world football - but we're ready. Their style is a little bit different.

"They've got a new coach who is a top coach and you can see the difference he's tried to make to the team. They are a little bit more direct. We've got to be prepared for that."
